The Movie Studio
A major studio had rapidly grown its digital business. In a short period of time, the studio, one of the largest creators and distributors of television and film content, had signed over 250 deals for global distribution of its properties. The contract terms varied wildly, reflecting the highly segmented state of the marketplace, including the various devices consumers use to access the entertainment and the number of distribution partners required to supply those channels. As a consequence of the number of geographical territories covered by the contracts, the studio was also faced with a bewildering array of promotions and discounts.
The number of deals signed coupled with the staggering number of variables contained was a huge management challenge. The studio was struggling to prepare management reports, conduct revenue assurance audits and ensure compliance against contract terms.
As an interim solution, more than 20 temporary workers and contractors around the world were hired to manually rationalize the data received from the studio's partners, consolidating it against master data and contract terms. It took the entire research team to then generate weekly flash reports. Not surprisingly, the studio ran up huge costs to process the data that generated inaccurate and spotty reporting with no audit trail.
The studio turned to Mediamorph and its mm:TRACK module to take over the reporting function. The Mediamorph team ingested master data and catalogue information from the studio's SAP feed and set up business rules so that the Mediamorph module could "learn" the reporting formats for each distribution partner. Sales and remittance data from over 200 contracts was acquired, loaded cleansed and validated while at the same time on-boarding new customers. The master data that Mediamorph rationalized and validated was integrated into other studio systems including:
- Inbound product and customer master EDI feeds
- Outbound feed to the warehouse for sales and adjustments
- Outbound feed to SAP for debit and credit memos
- Journal entry generation for non-SAP territories
The Mediamorph team consulted with all of the studio departments using the information to create report templates that met their specific needs. Better information led to closer coordination of studio functions and produced cost savings in many areas. For example, two key users of the information processed by Mediamorph were the finance and digital promotions teams. These two areas historically had worked in separate silos, leading to accounting anomalies that were extraordinarily difficult and time-consuming to reconcile. Once Mediamorph's mm:TRACK was installed and operational, digital teams that ran endless discounts and promotions across multiple territories saw price point information ripple through to the finance workflow, and for the first time the numbers reconciled perfectly, producing an immediate cost saving.
Once mm:TRACK was fully functioning, Mediamorph's other modules, mm:LICENSE, mm:SYNDICATE and mm:ROYALTY were deployed, thereby essentially outsourcing most contract, pricing, royalty tracking and billing functions. This saved the studio money and enhanced revenue with more accurate and timely billing.
Without any infrastructural commitment from the studio, Mediamorph seamlessly assumed responsibility for all contract auditing and automated the monthly accounting entries, invoicing, billing and journal entry creation. This resulted in a 75% cost savings for the studio. On top of the cost savings, Mediamorph improved the accuracy and timeliness of management reporting, audited customers' revenues and found additional revenues due to the studio. Within eight months, the studio had generated a positive return on its investment.
